Original ranking by NutriVerdict

"Low calorie" is one of the most misused labels in the grocery aisle, because a number on its own says nothing about what you actually get for those calories. On NutriVerdict, the 148 foods that qualify here are the ones that deliver real nutrition without a heavy energy cost. We measure that with our Nutrient Density Score, a 1 to 100 rating of how much vitamin, mineral, and protein value a food provides per calorie, benchmarked against everything else in our USDA-sourced database.

How we rank these 148 foods

Every food on this page is sorted by that per-calorie density score, not simply by the lowest kcal. The result favors foods that are both light and genuinely nourishing. Leafy greens dominate the top: Spinach, raw and Watercress, raw each score 100 while supplying only 23 and 11 kcal per 100 grams, and Beet greens, raw and Chicory greens, raw sit in the same tier at roughly 22 to 23 kcal.

One honest caveat: a low calorie count does not make a food a complete meal. These greens are short on the fat, protein, and staying power you need across a full day, and individual calorie needs vary widely by age, activity, and health status. Read this ranking as a guide to smart additions, not a prescription. It is reference data, not medical or dietary advice.
