Our Nutrient Density Score is a relative, per-calorie measure on a 1 to 100 scale, built on nutrient values from the USDA FoodData Central reference dataset. Three food families cluster there again and again. Sugary drinks are the clearest case. A carbonated cream soda scores just 3, and a citrus soft drink with caffeine also lands at 3, because their calories come almost entirely from sugar with essentially no micronutrients attached. Pure sweeteners follow the same logic: granulated sugar scores 3 and honey scores 3, since they are close to pure carbohydrate energy.
